This original linocut print, one of a series showing historic monuments in their landscape, features Wayland's Smithy, a neolithic tomb on the Ridgeway near the famous White Horse of Uffington.
The print depicts Wayland's Smithy in late autumn, when the leaves have fallen from the trees and the monument exudes an exceptionally magical atmosphere surrounded by its grove of trees and hedges.
Making this print was exceptionally difficult, involving the use of numerous plates and masks to ensure the different layerting of colours and textures. The pricing of the print reflects the work involved.
It is hand printed on 250 gsm Somerset Velvet Paper on a 19th Century Albion Press in 5 colours, printed from 4 different plates with layering via additional masks and signed and edition by the artist. Printed area: 12" x 9"; paper size approx twice as much again.
One of variable edition of 4.
This colour way is slightly different to version "2"; here the final colour applied is a dark aubergine to create a more muted appearance of the image.
