This original linocut print features a scene from the Middle English alliterative masterpiece Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Here, Gawain arrives at the mysterious castle of Hautdesert after his long journey through the land of Logres.
As the poem says,
The knight bided on his horse and beheld from the bank
Of the deep double ditch that defended that place,
That its walls rose from water wonderfully deep,
And thus a huge height it seemed, heaped upon high...
The print is hand printed on 250 gsm Somerset Velvet Paper on a 19th Century Albion Press in 3 colours, printed from 1 plate using complex masking and signed and edition by the artist. Printed area: 12" x 12"; paper size approx twice as much again.
